Dua for Leaving the House (Divine Protection and Guidance)
Recited when crossing the threshold of one’s home to entrust oneself into Allah’s care, upon which angels proclaim safety and devils flee.
بِسْمِ اللَّهِ، تَوَكَّلْتُ عَلَى اللَّهِ، وَلَا حَوْلَ وَلَا قُوَّةَ إِلَّا بِاللَّهِ
Bismillāh, tawakkaltu ‘alā-llāh, wa-lā ḥawla wa-lā quwwata illā billāh
Tawakkul is conscious reliance on Allah while taking natural steps. "La hawla wa la quwwata illa billah" surrenders all autonomy to the Creator, acknowledging that not a single movement occurs without His permission.
The Prophet ﷺ said: "When a man goes out of his house and says this, it is said to him: ‘You have been guided, defended and protected,’ and the devils turn away from him." (Sunan Abu Dawud 5095; Jami‘ at-Tirmidhi 3426).
Dua Before Sleep and Upon Waking Up
The Sunnah formulas declaring that sleep is a minor death and awakening is an act of divine resurrection, sanctified with the name of Allah.
Bi-smika Allāhumma amūtu wa-aḥyā ... Al-ḥamdu li-llāhi-lladhī aḥyānā ba‘da mā amātanā wa-ilayhi l-nushūr
Sleep is named a "minor death" in the Quran (39:42). Opening and closing consciousness with Allah’s remembrance frames every day inside sacred mindfulness.
Hudhaifah ibn al-Yaman (RA) reported: "Whenever the Prophet ﷺ intended to go to bed, he would recite: Bismika Allahumma amutu wa ahya. And upon waking, he said: Al-hamdu lillahil-ladhi ahyana..." (Sahih al-Bukhari 6324).
